After nearly a century the America’s Cup returned to New York on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York in Brookfield Place, NY. After a few days of rainy weather and rough downpours in New York, Saturday began with a light rolling fog and flat waters out on the Hudson. Weather proved to be a great challenge for teams looking to race, but tens of thousands of spectators packed the spectator village for a chance to watch the races.

Skipper James “Jimmy” Spithill of ORACLE TEAM USA remarked, “It was great race track, and you could hear cheering from fans… I’ve been to Madison Square Garden, I’ve been to Yankee Stadium – they’ve got nothing on the Hudson River stadium. People were lined up from Tribeca all the way to Battery Park” (Read more of Spithill’s interview here).

With such a dramatic shift in weather from earlier in the week, the America’s Cup teams were challenged to find wind out on the Hudson and this proved to be a major challenge for race crews and the teams. After a number of delays and course resets, the America’s Cup crew was forced to abandon the start of the scheduled race.

After abandoning the start of the race,  however, winds picked up just enough to begin racing and a substitute race was held. SoftBank Team Japan was able to secure a victory in the race, but the team’s victory may be overridden if conditions improve during Day Two of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York.

SoftBank Team Japan’s Dean Barker said of the substitute race, “Amazing to take race one…we’re really happy with it. Had a good start, good first run and then consolidated from there. We’ll only find out tomorrow if it counts but this shows the gains we’re making.”

On Day Two, now being called Super Sunday, a total of three races are scheduled with each race now counting for double points. Teams will be looking to secure their footing on the Hudson and sailors hope to take a stand on the podium.
