Saturday at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event in Chicago promised to be a day of thrilling action, on and off the water and the day bellowed to the fans on Navy Pier as thousands of spectators and sailing fans from around the world packed the America’s Cup Village. Both waterways and shore lines were packed with fans excited to watch six of the best sailing teams in the world battle it out on the waters just off Chicago’s iconic city scape.
Wind was less-than-cooperative for the earlier part of the day, but conditions steadily improved in the Windy City. After cancelling the official races, SoftBank Team Japan was awarded a victory for their stellar performance in Friday’s practice races – putting Dean Barker’s team at the top of the leaderboard.
Fans were not left with disappointment, however, as several events at Navy Pier captivated the attention of sailing fans from around the world. At noon all eyes looked skywards as Sean Tucker, decorated pilot extraordinaire of Team Oracle, gave a breathtaking display of aerobatic skills in his one-of-a-kind bi-plane. In addition to Tucker’s stunt plane performance, the Bremont Horsemen appeared as well and several events on dry land kept fans engaged and excited.
With official racing set to resume on Sunday, America’s Cup teams will battle it out on freshwater for a chance to show fans and spectators something they have never seen before. Points scored at each event accumulate throughout the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, which means that each event is enormously important in the lead-up to the 2017 races in Bermuda. With the top teams at the conclusion of the series collecting bonus points for the next stage of the competition, all 6 teams must lay it all on the line on Sunday in order to position themselves for success in Bermuda. Only 1 team can win the Cup – and at this point it’s anyone’s race. Racing will kick off tomorrow at 1:30pm CDT as athletes take the water for the next phase of their Odyssey on Lake Michigan.
