The America’s Cup is one of the fastest sports on water, and America’s Cup sailors rely on speed and the ability to turn and maneuver the boat quickly to gain an advantage during races. In the lead-up to this year’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series New York event, the boats have been fine-tuned and given technical tweaks from a team of skilled technical engineers and designers. One of the boat’s most prominent technical features is the inclusion of a rigid wing that powers the boat and increases speed without sacrificing control.

American design coordinator Scott Ferguson talks about the many performance advantages of a rigid wing compared to traditional soft sails.

“The soft sail system relies on a lot of internal loads within the sail itself to give it twist and shape and that is problematic,” he says. The increased loads result in needing a heavier, and therefore slower boat. “But the wing allows you to control twist without very much load at all.”
